Through eugenol, once again, cloves could help improve liver function. A study published in the journal Human & Experimental Toxicology back in 1996 found that short-term ingestion of eugenol as a dietary supplement decreased levels of GST – Glutathione-S-transferase, an enzyme that often serves as an indicator of liver disease. Its antioxidants may also contribute to liver disease prevention.
Animal studies found some more ambitious claims: eugenol was effective in reducing liver inflammation, and in reversing signs of cirrhosis and other liver damages.
