This is probably the dirtiest item in your house. According to a study published in the Scientific Reports that analyzed over a dozen used kitchen sponges, they contain over 45 billion microbes per square inch (with a very high amount of E. coli bacteria).
If you have a dishwasher, you should use it at least once a week and put your sponge in there to eliminate most of the bacteria.
Sponges are very attractive to these microorganisms because of their surface and humidity. So make sure you don’t use bathroom loofahs.
