Whether you grab a common over the counter medication such as Ibuprofen or a prescription drug, you will be surprised by the number of times that “sleepiness,” “drowsiness,” or “fatigue” will appear listed as a possible side effect.
Why does it happen? Well, some medicines affect the behavior of the neurotransmitters. These are endogenous chemicals that your nerves use to carry messages to each other.
Among other things, neurotransmitters play a crucial role in regulating your sleep and state of vigilance. Even though these are some of the most frequent side effects of many medications, they are often overlooked. And they shouldn’t!
