The first record of the saying goes back to the 19th century when it appeared in a magazine published in Wales. Originally, the saying was: eat an apple on going to bed and you will keep the doctor from earning their bread.
One century later, the saying shrank to: an apple a day, no doctor pay. And then to: an apple a day sends the doctor away, to finally evolve, in 1922, to what we know nowadays. It’s actually melodious, but it shouldn’t be taken seriously.
