When walking (and again, the fast you walk, the better), both your heart and lungs will have to work extra harder to make sure the additional oxygen needed is delivered to your muscles. This process improves the efficiency and health of your lungs.
A fairly simple way to see how this works in practice is by comparing your performance when you first start exercising with your performance after a few weeks of exercising regularly: at first, you will certainly struggle with shortness of breath, but then your body will get used to it and you will be able to endure for longer.
