4. Liver and gastrointestinal illness

Green or yellowish stools can be a sign of either liver or gastrointestinal problems. These two systems are intimately related through the bile (among other things).

This green-yellow fluid is produced in the liver, and its main function is to help your body break down fat from food so it can be more easily absorbed in the small intestine.

Your body is also supposed to break down the bile before excreting it along with the rest of the waste. When it doesn’t, your stools might have the color of this substance.

Other common liver issue symptoms include stomach pain, jaundice, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, dark urine, itchy skin, and fatigue. If you experience one of these symptoms along with green stools, you should talk to a doctor.
