3. Antibiotics and birth control shots

Everybody’s taken antibiotics at some point in their lives to treat or prevent a bacterial infection. Some may even argue that they are often overprescribed, which may contribute to creating antibiotic-resistant bacteria – a serious problem that many experts are extremely worried about.

But let’s not get into that discussion. These medications can change the bacterial flora in your lower intestine and kill a large portion of the bacteria responsible for the brown color of your stools.

This will inevitably lead to a color change. And yes, your stool might turn greenish. In some cases, antibiotic-induced diarrhea might also occur.

Another medication that has green stools as a side effect are birth control shots. Although the mechanism that causes that reaction is yet to be properly understood by the medical community, researchers know that hormonal changes can affect the biliary system – and, as we will see in the next section, that may cause a color change in your stools.
