6. Wounds that take too long to heal

Wounds are a doorway for all kinds of pathogens. That’s why we need to disinfect them carefully. Under normal conditions, your immune system can heal the wound quickly and avoid serious infections.

If your minor cuts and scratches take way too long to heal, it might be a sign that your immune system is struggling for some reason. This can be very dangerous because your body will be exposed to invading agents for much longer, so the risk of a serious infection is considerably higher.

How to boost your immune system

It is possible to improve your immune system with a few lifestyle changes. Here are some of the healthy-living strategies you should adhere to:

-Eat a healthy and balanced diet (high in fruits and vegetables);
-Exercise regularly;
-Maintain a healthy weight;
-Drink alcohol in moderation – or none at all, ideally;
-Get high-quality sleep;
-Don’t smoke;
-Keep your stress levels under control;
-Avoid infections by washing your hands frequently (and properly) and having good hygiene practices – especially while handling raw meat.

It’s also worth noting that your immune system may be weakened due to an immune system disorder. There are two types of immune disorders: autoimmune diseases, in which the immune system attacks and damages its tissues, and immunodeficiency diseases, in which the immune system cannot fight pathogens properly, thus leaving the body more vulnerable to infections.

The latter can either be congenital (the one you were born with) or acquired (the one you get later in life).

The immune system is vital to the proper functioning of our body. Make sure to do everything you can to keep it in good shape and discuss your doctor’s options if you feel it is not working properly.
