#8 – Lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease

In recent years, the scientific community has been especially interested in studying the health benefits of tea drinking in the area of cognition. Within this framework, several different studies were developed in an attempt to understand if tea had a preventive effect on Alzheimer’s disease.

The conclusions diverge and there is still no consensus in this regard, but a couple of studies reported that drinking green tea could be a very effective measure to reduce the incidence of dementia.

Although theoretically all teas contain caffeine because they are all derived from the same plant, black tea, oolong tea, and green tea are typically the ones that contain the highest amounts – in that order. So, if any of these is your favorite tea and you are very sensitive to the stimulating effect of caffeine, drinking a cup every day might not be a good idea. Here are some of the possible side effects:

Iron deficiency:

tea contains substances that belong to a class of compounds called tannins. Although these are perfectly safe, in some people it may affect the absorption of iron as tannins can bind to the iron contained in some specific foods preventing your system from absorbing it. If you have low iron levels, you should only drink tea between meals. Just to be safe.

Anxiety and stress:

In some people, caffeine may increase anxiety and stress levels. Of course, you would have to drink a huge amount of tea to reach the 200 mg of caffeine mark that research considered to affect anxiety levels considerably. 250 ml of tea can contain up to 65 mg of caffeine, so if you start feeling restless and anxious after drinking 1 liter of strong tea, you may want to slow down. Additionally, it may also disrupt your sleeping schedule if you drink it right before going to bed.

Headaches:

according to some studies, taking 100 mg of caffeine per day can cause recurrent headaches. If you are experiencing this side effect, reduce the amount of tea you drink daily and see if it has any effect on your body.

For all these reasons above, make sure you pick an unsweetened tea with minimal amounts of caffeine to drink regularly.
